HOW I MADE $153.31 IN MY FIRST 3 MONTHS BLOGGING WITH NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE. WHAT WORKED FOR ME AND WHAT DIDN’T. I SHARE IT ALL IN MY FIRST INCOME REPORT.
My first income report!
I am so excited to write this blog post today but if I’m being completely honest, I am so nervous to put this all out here publicly. I am so grateful that I started my blog and I want to make sure that I portray it properly. A big reason that I started my blog at all was to make money so reading someones first income report was really important and encouraging to me. I hope I can encourage someone else to start their own blog after knowing what is possible. The funny thing is that blogging is actually so much fun and I love doing it now but I absolutely would not have started it if there was no possibility to earn money.
This post may contain affiliate links which means that if you purchase something through one of my links, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting this blog! Read my full disclosure policy here.
Why am I sharing my first income report?
I want to share my income report because without them I would have never started my own blog. Reading them gave me hope that I could do it too. Not to mention, income reports teach a new blogger so much. What ad or affiliate networks to join and that sort of thing. Without them, I wouldn’t know that half of them even exist.
I hope to make this a monthly thing from now on to keep track of my progress and goals. Hopefully you will find it helpful to see what is working and what isn’t so you can learn half as fast as I did.
I really hope you take it as encouragement that it is not too late to start. There is a place for you in the blogging world if it is on your heart. I do believe that each day it gets a little harder though so if this is something you want to do, wait no longer! Get set up today! I have a guide here that will work you through the whole setting up process. Then send me an email or message me on instagram with any questions and I can help you through the giant learning curve. You got this!
As earned or as paid out?
I will be sharing as things are earned not when they were paid out. With most programs/companies, there’s a 30 to 60 day payout time. If I waited until it was actually paid out, it wouldn’t properly reflect what I needed to do to get the sale. Hopefully my blog will look completely different in two months and there will be more money coming in.
What worked for me these last three months?
First, lets all give props to the bloggers that make this look easy. There is a lot that goes into blogging and there is a huge learning curve. Do not be discouraged at the amount of things you need to learn!
I have actually had my blog for over a year now but only just started posting on it. One of the best investments I made for my blog was buying this course by one of my all time favourite people on the internet, Lisa from the Farmhouse on Boone blog.
In this course, she films her process of starting a new blog. From picking the name, to setting up the hosting, theme, plugins, etc! That part alone saved me so much time and stress. I spent 7 months trying to figure all of that out by myself and then had it done in an afternoon after buying the course.
Lisa then goes into every single aspect of blogging that you need to know. It felt like a I had a best friend who genuinely wanted to see me succeed so she was sharing every tip and trick she could think of. She also goes into detail on how to make money blogging (which is a big deal!). I highly recommend this course!
After taking this course, I started posting on my blog but I was also trying to learn instagram, facebook and youtube. It was all too much and my blog was the least of my priorities, thinking that success was going to be found on other platforms.
Long story short, I burnt myself out without seeing any results on the other platforms and took a long break from all social media.
On March 20th, I came back to my blog with a plan.
Focus on learning one thing at a time
I simplified things as much as I could so that I could focus on learning only one thing. At first, I just wrote posts so I could learn how to use WordPress. Then I decided to focus all my time and energy on Pinterest marketing to actually drive traffic to my blog.
If you look through my blog posts, you will see what I call “round up posts”. Round up posts are the sneakiest thing a blogger can do. Basically you compile a list of other peoples ideas (linking to them of course) so pinterest users can see all the ideas in one place. It really is helpful for everyone. The reader gets a list of ideas for the subject they were looking for. The original author/photographer gets promoted and hopefully more traffic. And you get traffic from doing minimal work.
By eliminating thinking of blog post ideas, writing the posts, taking the photos and all that, I was able to focus solely on learning how to leverage Pinterest for traffic.
My number one goal with my blog at the moment
My number one goal with my blog at the moment is to get into the ad network called Medivine. The payout is really high and it would be incredible passive income for my family and me.
What is working for me on Pinterest to get passive traffic everyday
I got an ebook from Dale at Blogging Her Way that taught me how to get started. Her ebook is incredible because it teaches you how to make money with affiliate links while leveraging Pinterest to drive traffic. You can purchase it here (Get Paid to Pin).
I started writing round up posts on topics that I knew would do well on pinterest and created beautiful pins for them. Joining group boards also really helped. The more exposure you can get on any pins, the better. I read from a few people that they were pinning fifty pins onto pinterest everyday with Tailwind so I invested in that. I know plenty of people are succesful without it but I am all about automated things to free up my time. A week after getting Tailwind, one of my posts skyrocketed to 1000 views. Up to that point, I was getting maybe ten views a day so it definitely helped me!
I try to spend some time making SEO friendly descriptions for the pins and pinning them into SEO friendly boards. Dale goes into more detail on that in her Ebook Get Paid to Pin
What didn’t work for me
Like I said above, I started to finally see some traffic and sales when I stopped trying to master all social media platforms. I narrowed it down to one thing to learn and only focused on that. For me the was Pinterest marketing and I’m so glad I did that!
Posts with the highest traffic from March 1st to May 30th:
This is where I get real vulnerable and start sharing the numbers. Here is how my traffic has looked from March 1st to May 30th.
I really shouldn’t even include March because it doesn’t show the steady growth that goes into blogging. For most of March, a good day was 8 sessions for the whole day. Then on March 20th I started to utilize Pinterest properly and joined some group boards. Right at the end of the month when of my pins took off and I had a few days over one thousand sessions. It was super upsetting when it came back down and I realized that one pin alone wouldn’t get me crazy traffic forever (although that does happen for some people!)
My lowest since then has been 30 sessions in one day but I normally sit around 100 each day. A good day has been 300 sessions.
The super exciting thing is that once the posts are written and pins are out there in Pinterest land, they just continue getting traffic. I have not been working that hard yet I get around 100 sessions everyday! That’s insane!
First Income Report
Affiliates* – 150 USD
Media.net – $3.31 USD
The hosting that I use to run this blog. Since I plan on making money through my blog, hosting is extremely important. I don’t have to worry about someone else randomly shutting down my website or the speeds slowing down unexpectedly. Plus anytime that I have had a question about switching security settings, domain problems or anything else like that, someone in the chat has been there to help me out instantly. I have nothing but positive things to say about Bluehost and my experience with them!
Everyone is already buying everything on Amazon anyway, you may as well make a little extra money in the process! I love the fact that I can link to products that I use around the house, help someone find an awesome product that they might not know existed and I make a little something for my hard work. We live in a cool world!
The #1 course that I recommend to everyone! She goes into every single aspect of setting up a blog that you are proud of. I would not have actually started my blog without his course. Some of the highlights in this course:
- How to create a blog from scratch. She records her computer screen as she starts a new blog. How she picks the name, all the technical stuff of setting up the blog, picking a theme (which is actually a lot complex than I originally imagined) and designing a blog that looks beautiful (also extremely complex and irritating when you are trying to do it by yourself).
- How to write a good blog post
- Grow your blog with social media (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Tailwind)
- Why you should grow your email list
- How to shoot and edit video on a phone
- How to monetize a blog! The most important and hardest thing to find real information on online.
Literally hours and hours of incredible information!
How you can leverage Pinterest to make money even if you don’t have a blog. Very concise and helpful when I was first getting started. She also includes a giant list of Group boards that you can apply to join which saved me so much time searching them out!
Goals for June
As I am writing this we are already two weeks into June but here goes on my goals anyway:
- Achieve 10 000 sessions – Currently have 1.1k
- Become a member of 50 Group Boards – Currently at 9
- Write 8 new posts in July – Currently have two
- Start growing email list
I hope you enjoyed my first income report!
The goal is to document my journey to encourage and inspire others to start their own blog. I also know that it will be fun to look back at one day and remember what it took to build a successful blog.
What about you?!
